Mathew found his love of photography quite accidentally at an early age, playing in his parents’ makeshift darkroom while they were at work. There’s no telling how much paper and film was unknowingly destroyed in the process as he marveled at the red glow and strange magic of the darkroom. Years later, photography found him again. After switching high schools during his sophomore year, he needed an extra class to fill his new schedule. Photography happened to fit. Whether it was actually a decision or simply the discovery of something already there, this was it: photography, printing, and the essence of light. Fast forward a few decades through film school, some wild rides and close calls, and the passion has never left. Mathew has spent a lifetime pursuing an ever-changing bucket list of challenges and dreams through both commercial and fine art photography. Along the way, he has photographed everything from autopsies and aircraft to weddings and thousands of advertising products. Through it all, he discovered that photography isn’t merely about the subject. It’s about the light—how it falls, bounces, illuminates, and wraps around everything we see. The craft became less about what was in front of the camera and more about learning to see: recognizing a moment, composing it, capturing it, and sharing it. Why? Simply because it’s beautiful. Landscapes, nature, and the overlooked details of the world continue to inspire his work. Whether it’s a vast landscape or a close-up of a nail in a piece of wood, the subject may change, but the pursuit remains much the same: light, composition, and the act of looking closely.
